Holkham and Wells are two of my favourite beaches for dogs. Not only because of the endless white sand, the fact they are interconnected so make for a great coastal walks, and there are lots of little pools which Murphy loves to paddle in.

Starting at Church Plain, there is lots of free on street parking. This gets busy in the summer, however, so you might be better starting further down at the harbour.

Starting on Church Plain with the church on your right and Youth Hostel on your left, walk down the road until you reach the end, then turn left on to Station Road and immediately right down Staithe Street (the main High Street).

Carry on down this road and you will reach The Quay. Follow the signs towards the beach. Then continue down the longish road past the harbour until you reach the beach. The first section of Wells beach doesn’t allow dogs, so follow the path round through the lovely Wells Next The Sea Beach Cafe (stopping for a drink if you have chance! They also serve great dog ice cream in the summer), and down towards the woods at the side of the car park.

Turn right before the lake and take some steps up and over the sand dunes before coming down on to the beach. Follow a line of colourful beach huts until they disappear. Then continue to keep to this edge of the beach as you follow the path round and it becomes Holkham beach.

As you follow the path round you’ll then come to some more stairs leading off the beach. Follow the boardwalk round until you reach Lady Ann’s Road. Walk up the road (careful as this is a road cars drive down and also the car park) before reaching the main road. Directly opposite here you will see the dog friendly Victoria Inn, a great pub serving quality food, a lot of which is sourced from the Holkham estate.

After you have refreshed in the Victoria, carry on down the path towards Holkham Hall. Pass through the main gate, and continue down the road towards the hall itself. Carry on until you reach a bend in the road, and turn sharp left (almost back on yourself). If you want to go and look at the hall, continue up the road and you will see it in front of you.

Follow the path until you reach another fork in the road, and then bear left. Carry on through a cattle gate and through the woods. You will then come to East Lodge on your left an exit the park through the gate.

Carry on down this road until you reach the main road- A149. Keep to the path on this busy road and follow it until you reach the Wells-Next-The-Sea sign. Then continue straight on into the town. Follow this road back down turning right into High Street which then becomes Church Plain- our starting point.

Watch Murphy loving running around on Wells-Next-The-Sea beach below!

[…] Our favourite beach by a long stretch is Holkham, and it would seem we’re not alone. Holkham took home the prize for Best Beach at the 2018 BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards. It has endless miles of unspoilt golden sands sheltered by pine woods at the back of the beach. Honestly, the photos don’t do it justice! It is really dog friendly and there aren’t any restrictions, plus although it is popular, it never feels busy due to it’s massive expanse. I’d really recommend taking the walk from Wells-Next-the-Sea to Holkham to really experience the beach and surrounding area. You can find it on our website here. […]
