One of the best things I’ve discovered since becoming a parent is how powerful a walk can be. Not just for our dog (who, of course, loves it), but for me and my baby too. Whether it’s a quick loop around the village or a proper countryside wander, walking has become one of our favourite daily rituals.

If you’re a new parent thinking about getting out more, here’s why walking with your baby is such a win — and a few products that have genuinely made our outings easier and more enjoyable.

The Benefits of Walking With Your Baby

Walking is one of those deceptively simple activities that ticks a lot of boxes. It helps:

✅ Soothe a fussy baby (movement and fresh air work wonders!)

✅ Support postnatal recovery by gently increasing movement

✅ Boost your mood (hello endorphins and sunlight 😍)

✅ Bond with your baby in a calm, screen-free way

✅ Get your dog out – family adventure, sorted

✅ It’s also a great way to reconnect with nature, explore your local area, or just reset after a long night.

The Gear That Makes It Easier

You don’t need loads of kit to start walking with your baby, but a couple of clever buys can make a big difference. Here are my top picks:

Momcozy Baby Carrier

I’ve tried a few different carriers, but the Momcozy Baby Carrier stands out for how comfortable and supportive it feels — especially during longer walks. It distributes the weight really evenly, and I love that I can pop Charlotte in and out quickly when she’s had enough. It also folds up compactly into the pram basket or changing bag.

Clair de Lune Star Wrap

This Clair de Lune Star Wrap is a game-changer in colder weather. It’s a super soft fleece wrap that works brilliantly with a carrier, and it’s much less faff than coats or snowsuits. It has an integrated hood so is easy to take layers on and off in the interchangeable weather too. The star shape is adorable and the design makes nappy changes really easy too. Charlotte always looks so cosy in it, and we get stopped all the time by people asking where it’s from!

Mamalila Babywearing Jackets

When it’s chilly, rainy or windy, a proper babywearing jacket makes all the difference. I have the Mamalila Outdoor Babywearing Jacket – Explorer and absolutely love it — it’s breathable, waterproof, and adjustable as your baby grows. Plus, it fits nicely over both front and back carriers. Mamalila has a whole range of styles depending on your climate, taste and budget, and they’re built to last through multiple babies or seasons.

Out ‘n’ About Nipper Pram

If you’re more of a pram walker than a carrier person (or like to switch it up), the Out ‘n’ About Nipper is a brilliant choice. It’s lightweight but incredibly sturdy, with chunky tyres that handle countryside terrain, bumpy footpaths and muddy parks like a champ. It’s a favourite among dog owners because it’s easy to steer one-handed while holding a lead — and it folds down really flat for storage or the car boot.

Tips for Successful Baby Walks

I know even the smallest outing can feel like the biggest challenge in the first few months of motherhood, so here are some things I’ve found to help:

👶🏻 Pick your time: After a feed or nap tends to be the sweet spot.

👶🏻 Layer smart: Use a babywearing jacket and breathable base layers for comfort in all weathers.

👶🏻 Be flexible: Some walks might last 10 minutes, others an hour. Follow your baby’s cues.

👶🏻 Bring the basics: A changing kit, muslin cloth, dummy (if your baby uses one), and something for you — like a coffee or snack!

👶🏻 Mix up your routes: Explore local footpaths, nature reserves, or dog-friendly parks to keep things interesting.

Remember, walking with your baby doesn’t have to be a big outing — it’s about little moments of calm, fresh air, and connection. Some of my happiest memories in these early months have been made out on a walk with the baby snug against me, the dog trotting ahead, and a bit of sun peeking through the clouds.

Do you walk with your baby regularly? Got any kit you swear by? I’d love to hear from you — drop a comment or come say hi on Instagram @greatbritishdogwalks.
